Today's Zinger:

The Only Way To Derail A Train Is To Get Ahead Of It

The Morning Briefing:

This is a brief note prior to the Massachusetts special election which pits Martha Coakley (Dem) versus Scott Brown (Rep).  This is the seat that was vacated by Ted Kennedy (Dem) and was held by Ted Kennedy for the past 45 years.  No one thought it possible that a Republican could challenge, or potentially win, in the Peoples Republic of Massachusetts.  However, most polls show that the Republican challenger is leading, just prior to the election.

No matter if he wins or loses, a message is being sent to Washington.  This is not a state election, but rather a national referendum.  Many people are not happy with the direction the country is going.  The people are not happy with the health care legislation.  The people are tired of the payoffs, the lack of transparency, the secret deals and the bribes.  The people are tired of the lack of progress on financial reform.  The people are tired of the wars.  The people are tired of the deficits.  The people are tired of the debt.  The people are tired of the taxes.  Most of all the people are tired of a lack of progress on those things that the people feel are critical.

As Scott Brown said in his debate with Martha Coakley, this is not Ted Kennedy's seat, this is the people's seat, and people all across the nation are vicariously taking part in this election.

President Obama visited Massachusetts to support Martha Coakley.  He pulled out every slogan that has been used in the past.  Big business, Wall Street greed, standing for the middle class, and of course the evil insurance companies and predatory mortgage companies. Here is a quote from the Coakley rally from President Obama.  He hit every note in just two sentences.

"Martha knows the struggles Massachusetts working families face because she's lived those struggles. She's fought for the people of Massachusetts every single day," Obama is shown saying in the spot during a gymnasium rally at Northeastern University. He says she "took on Wall Street" as attorney general, while going after big insurance companies and predatory lenders.

But the slogans are flying in the face of the administration.  During the campaign, President Obama spoke of the strength of words.  He was often hear saying "words, just words" and then went on to speak to the power of words.

But for this college professor (Barack Obama), these words are just words and people are calling him on it.  The Massachusetts miracle may turn out to be a Republican in the Senate from the bluest of blue states.  If this happens, hopefully the majority party will understand that this is a referendum on the administration, not Martha Coakley.  However, I'm sure she will be thrown under the bus and the blame will be assigned to her.

As Zinger readers know, I personally think it is better for our country to have both parties adequately represented.  When one party has a clear majority, we the people lose our voice and the majority party focuses on their own agenda.  We as a nation are about to take on some very significant legislation to fix our debt, health care, social security, Medicare, the wars, etc.  I'm of the opinion that a negotiated settlement between the political parties will yield a better result.
