Today's Zinger:

"It Pays To Be Sick In The United States"

The Morning Briefing:

Joe Wilson (R-SC) shouted at the President "You Lie" when the President said the current health care proposal excludes illegal immigrants.  HB 3200 (health care) previously contained language which could be interpreted to include illegals.  His outburst resulted in his censure by Congress.  His outburst also caused a change in the health care bill to specifically deny health care coverage for illegals.

We now learn that a group of Democrats are pushing to include illegal immigrants in the health care bill.  In addition, their proposal includes the subsidy of premiums if the illegal immigrants do not earn enough money to pay the premium.  It also sets no time minimum for how long they need to be in the country to take part in this program.

We are becoming a haven for a cash society that relies on US social programs for their existence.
Our current laws and the proposed health care legislation ensure that the United States will attract the world's sick.

Who Said It:

"The men who do not become Americans and nothing else are hyphenated Americans; and there ought to be no room for them in this country. The man who calls himself an American citizen and who yet shows by his actions that he is primarily the citizen of a foreign land, plays a thoroughly mischievous part in the life of our body politic. He has no place here; and the sooner he returns to the land to which he feels his real heart-allegiance, the better it will be for every good American. There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else...."

Discussion:

Current health care proposals open us up to becoming a haven for the world's sickest people.  The United States is one of the few countries in the world that allows illegal immigrants full access to free health care.  We would be the only country to subside the premium payments to people that break our laws and enter our country illegally.

If the proposed Democratic amendment to HB 3200 is approved, what will stop the seriously ill from all corners of the world from illegally entering our country and taking advantage of our medical system.  The Statue of Liberty will have to be modified to "Give us you tired, your poor and your really, really sick."

Federal law requires that medical providers cannot turn down anyone, legal or illegal, that requires urgent medical care.  This is why so many illegals use the emergency room for all of their medical needs.  This ends up costing the United States taxpayers over $30 billion per year, though the exact amount is unknown and could be as high as $100 billion.  For this reason, many argue, if we deny health insurance coverage for illegals, they will continue to use the emergency rooms resulting in a higher cost to U.S. taxpayers.  But there are two problems with this analysis.  It will not cost more.  At an average cost of $5,000 per person for premiums and assuming half of the 17 million illegals will not be able to pay for premiums, the total cost is in the range of $50 billion per year.  In addition, if we allow illegals full access to our system, we as a nation are advertising to the sickest people around the world that if they sneak into our country we will pay for their health care and ultimately their social needs of housing, food, clothing, etc. resulting in a continuous burden to our country.

Many also say that it is the illegal worker that does the jobs that Americans do not want.  This is not true.  Illegals have taken over the jobs that were once filled by our young people, students, people in transition and those that lacked the skills or capabilities to fill higher level jobs.  As a result, many of our young people are shut out of work and never build the early skills and work ethic.  Recently, the Obama administration went after several businesses that hired illegal immigrants.  After paying the fines and sending the illegals away, amazingly they hired American citizens.

With official unemployment at 10% and unofficial unemployment approaching 17%, there are plenty of Americans to take the jobs that are currently held by illegals.  It would benefit our country if the youth and under-skilled of this country worked these jobs to gain experience and reduce the cost of welfare for some.  If there are jobs that Americans don't want, illegals can be treated the way American companies treat consultants.  They are hired for a specific purpose, paid a reasonable wage and then go away.  They do not get benefits. Many businesses import temporary workers from all over the world for season jobs.  They receive their visa and complete their work then return home.  This is a sane temporary worker program.  Instead, most of our 17 million illegals sneak into our country and stay and then make demands on our social structure.

In order to stop the insanity of health care for illegals, it is critical that the Federal government change  laws that forces providers to care for illegals in an emergency.  What this means is that health care legislation must be enacted with changes in immigration law.  Separating these issues will lead to higher costs and greater stress in our economic, political and social system.
