Today's Zinger:
An Opening Gambit Is Either Strategic Genius or Rash Stupidity
President Obama's European Gambit
Webster's Definition of Gambit:
In Chess: an opening in which a player seeks to obtain some advantage by sacrificing a pawn or piece.
The Morning Briefing:
The Obama administration has made the opening move in strategic defense and it may just be brilliant. Until yesterday, the installation of missile defense in the Czech Republic and Poland were considered critical, not only to these countries, but to European security as well. Yesterday, the administration made a radical change in policy. The administration canceled the installation of the long range missile defense system and opted for a less costly and more easily implemented short range system. The change in direction caught everyone by surprise since just one year ago candidate Obama affirmed that the missile defense system in Poland and Czech Republic would go on as planned.
One thing that I have observed with this administration, you cannot rely on what they say, as there appears to be more going on in the background that remains unsaid. You have to watch their actions, not their words. In the case of the change in missile defense, I predict that this will be a beneficial move.
Who Said It:
"Few Men Are Killed By The Bayonet, Many Are Scared By It."
The Discussion:
President Obama has either made a brilliant strategic move or demonstrated that he does not have a good handle on strategic policy decisions. The President has decided to change directions on the deployment of a long range strategic missile defense system scheduled to be deployed in Czech Republic and Poland. The Russians cheered, the Poles and Czechs are shaking and their heads and the rest of Europe can't believe what happened.
On the surface it appears that the United States, in an effort to improve relations with the Russians, has made this change. Many of the pundits are condemning the administration's decision. Our NATO partners must be thinking that the United States can no longer be a trusted partner.
But that is exactly why this may be a brilliant move. Our "NATO partners" have been speaking out of both sides of their mouth for years. With the exception of Great Britain, Europe has been a luke warm ally for many of the policies the United States has pursued. Europe will certainly react negatively to this change in direction by the administration, however they may actually have to become more involved in their own defense as a result, both in terms of feet on the ground and money.
It is clear to me that the administration has accepted the fact the Iran will have nuclear weapons, despite candidate Obama saying that a nuclear Iran is totally unacceptable. It is clear to me that administration has finally taken the deficit problem seriously and is looking for any and all ways to close the deficit gap, and it is clear to me that no matter what we do Russia will not be our ally as they have already aligned themselves with energy mafia around the world.
Just one day after this policy announcement Europe is negotiating with Russia to link their missile defense systems with NATO. This is a fascinating game of chess. We made the opening gambit move of sacrificing our missile program. Now Europe has to take their own defense more seriously and counters with a proposal to Russia to integrate missiles. It is now Russia's move. If they turn down the offer from Europe, Russia has signaled their true alliance with Iran. If they accept the European proposal, Iran will may become more isolated. If Russia becomes more aligned with NATO, China may feel more threatened and reevaluate its partnerships.
The current chess game of missiles and demons was stalled with Russia, China, Europe, Iran and the United States. Unfortunately for Poland and The Czech Republic, they may be the sacrificed pawns in this high stakes Gambit.
