Nancy Pelosi, Afghanistan , Speaker of the House
To Zinger's subscribers: Zinger has had to make an unexpected trip to Florida and has not been able to publish. It has been driving me crazy watching the economic and political news without an opportunity to comment. The Zinger will return by early next week. In the meantime, I have to make one quick comment about Nancy Pelosi and Joe Wilson

Today's Zinger:
The Peter Principle Has Been Replaced By The Pelosi Principle: Rising To Her Highest Level Of Incompetence.
The battle in Afghanistan is heating up, both on the battlefield and in the halls of Congress. The administration has said that the real war on terror is Afghanistan and we must win this war, yet to win this war will cost more in terms of money and lives. The questions now are, is this war worth winning and does the Democratic Party that constantly criticized the Bush administration for its handling of Iraq and Afghanistan, and even called the war in Afghanistan lost, have the political will and and leadership to win the war in Afghanistan?
The President seems committed to winning the war in Afghanistan. President Obama has said throughout the campaign that Afghanistan is the real source of terror and it is important for the United States to take the war back to Afghanistan and win. The President has now recommended a surge of troops to stabilize the current situation on the ground.
Based on public opinion polls that show most American's are turning against the war (isn't that a surprise, American's turning against a war) Nancy Pelosi has said that that there is insufficient support for a surge in Afghanistan . Isn't it comforting to know that the Speaker of the House relies on opinion polls to decide the international strategies for the United States. Lincoln had the public turn against him in the Civil War. Roosevelt had the same situation in WW II. Bush had the same problem in that the American public and most Democrats in Congress declared Iraq a lost cause.
Speaker Pelosi would have ensured that we would have lost WW II, she almost accomplished defeat in Iraq. Fortunately President Bush understood the consequences of defeat and pressed on. Fortunately President Roosevelt understood the consequences of defeat and pressed on. The Battle of Iwo Jima changed the course of history. Had it not been for that picture of American soldiers raising the flag over the Japanese stronghold, the media and the American public would have given up on winning. Abraham Lincoln experienced the same public outcry during the Civil War. The great speech at Gettysburg was meant to deal with some of the unrest. Lincoln knew that this war must be won to preserve the Union and the Constitution. Understanding the significance of a country founded on "for the people, by the people", Lincoln pressed on.
In 1968, authors Peters and Hull published the humorous look at how employees of a hierarchical organization rise to their highest level of incompetence. The book, The Peter Principle, became an shorthand for incompetence. Speaker Pelosi has repeatedly demonstrated poor judgment and is a destabilizing figure in Congress. Even members of her own party recognize the problems that she creates and are willing to speak out against her. Its' time for the Speaker to be silent.
Joe Wilson:
Today, Congress censured Joe Wilson for his outburst during President Obama's speech that "he lied" when the President said that HB 3200, Health Care Insurance Reform, does not cover illegal aliens. His outburst certainly got everyone attention. While I can't agree with his lack of civility, he certainly got everyone focused on the issue.
The House Bill did not include specific language that would have covered illegal aliens, however, it also did not exclude illegal aliens. In fact, the bill could have been interpreted to include illegal aliens. The Republicans offered amendments three times to specifically exclude illegal aliens. Each time it was voted down by the Democrats. So in fact, when Congress had the opportunity to affirm that illegals were not included, the repeatedly declined.
Not until Joe Wilson broke house rules did Congress agree to include specific language to exclude illegal aliens. Until then, aliens could be included by omission. Now it is very clear that they will not be covered under the plan, however if the illegal alien has a child born in the United States then the child is a citizen and the parents (illegals) will be required to purchase health insurance and if they can't afford it the taxpayers of the United States will pick up the bill.
As an interesting point, in 2007 according to the LA Times, 70% of the live births in LA were to illegal aliens. So not only will Federal Taxpayers cover the tab for their health care, it will also probably bail out California since they are already over $25 billion in debt with no apparent way out. Maybe we need a Wilson moment in the California legislature.

It is interesting how Peolosi is interested in public opinion when it comes to the war but ignores public opinion poles when it comes to the health care bill. Pelosi likes public opinion when it aliens with her views and if she disagrees then the public are Nazi's.
