Today's Zinger:
If The Left Is Wrong, And The Right Is Not Right, Who's Left That's Right?
Views On The News:
The Federal Reserve is inflating their ability to manage the economy. Chairman Bernanke reassures Congress that they have the tools to control inflation as the economy begins to recovery.
“Mission Accomplished?” A recovery without jobs is no recovery at all.
California is going up in smoke. Deficit spending in California has reached a new “high” .
Speaker Pelosi is speechless. Pelosi calls for a truth commission but they can't find anyone qualified.
The “Pickens” are slim for T. Boone’s wind farm.
President Obama is taking care of business. The administration's efforts to control immigration by going after businesses that hire illegal aliens.
Health care starts in the laboratory. When you have 50 individual laboratories to test a risky experiment, why would anyone bypass the lab and go directly in to wide scale production?
From one administration to another, close the door behind you.
Paving the way for 11 million new Democratic American Citizens.
The Discussion:
The Fed is inflating its ability to manage the economy.
Chairman Bernanke has testified to Congress that the Fed has the tools to control inflation as the economy begins to recover. He has also assured Congress that interests rates will remain low to protect an economic recovery. Isn’t it comforting to know that Mr. Bernanke believes the Fed can manage inflation with more than $3 trillion in deficit spending coming on line this year and interest rates remaining near zero? The only way this is going to happen is if deflation becomes a significant problem (thereby offsetting inflation from massive government borrowing). Why do I feel like I’m being sold some elixir or potion out of the trunk of a car?
Mission Accomplished. Recovery without jobs is no recovery at all.
A little reported fact is that earlier this week the Fed announced that they believe there will be no new job creation in the next five years. We are on a path to stagflation. How can the government push so many job-endangering bills (cap and trade, health care, tax increases) at a time when the economy is so fragile? I fully expect that we will soon hear Congress talking of Stimulus II (because Stimulus I is not working) or shifting Stimulus I money away from planned future projects to current social spending, such as extending unemployment benefits or health care for unemployed. This means we will pay short term expenses with long term borrowing, a financial disaster in the making. Somehow, as GNP grows (even without jobs) the administration will translate this into economic “Mission Accomplished”. In actuality, it is transfer payments and government spending that is sustaining a wounded economy with nothing on the horizon to rebuild the job market or the economy long term.
California is going up in smoke
Governor Swarzenegger announced that there would be $15 billion in budget cuts and approximately $11 billion of shell game money moved around to close California’s budget deficit. Also announced was additional oil well drilling off the Santa Barbara Coast (Ronald Reagan’s backyard) and consideration of legalizing marijuana to provide a new source of tax revenue. I think Zinger nailed this one in the May 20, 2009 Article (When you spend more than you take in, inhale deeply), and the May 22, 2009 article regarding California's rush for gold.
The California taxpayer revolt against higher taxes is a harbinger of things to come across the United States as Federal spending continues to escalate and state governments fall further behind in tax receipts due to a jobless economic recovery.
Speaker Pelosi is speechless.
Speaker Pelosi is not speaking. Last week, Leon Panetta said that the CIA has not been fully forthcoming with Congress in the past. Eight democrats sang from the songbook, the CIA lied. Nothing has been heard since. If the CIA is lying to Congress and it is true that Nancy Pelosi was not informed of enhanced interrogation techniques when the CIA says that she had been briefed, then why has there been the cone of silence over this the past two weeks? This is a huge story that requires investigation of the CIA. Our country cannot accept the notion that the CIA can operate outside the law, nor can we operate with the Speaker of the House lying to the American people either.
Speaker Pelosi has called for a truth commission. The first challenge is seating the commission. Apparently that has been difficult as there has been nothing done for weeks on this. Its’ time to play truth or dare. Lets’ find out who is telling the truth.
President Obama is taking care of business.
President Obama has decided to take a unique approach to stop immigration. Rather than trying to fence them out or round them up and put them in jail, he is going to enforce the existing laws with employers that hire illegals. What a great idea. Enforce the law. Too bad George Bush didn’t think of it. The American people often confuse activity with results. Building a fence should keep everyone placated but cutting off access to jobs will have a lasting affect.
The “Pickens” are slim for T. Boone’s wind farm.
T.Boone Pickens has finally admitted that his wind farm idea was full of hot air. After months of touting wind as a replacement for oil, and over $40 million dollars promoting the idea, Pickens has canceled plans for his investment in wind energy. Pickens has realized that it will take many years before there could possibly be enough turbines to make a noticeable difference in the energy supply. He also recognizes that the cost per kilowatt is prohibitive and there is difficulty in distributing the energy produced.
Soon we will hear of thesolar alternative was more glare than reality. Zinger wrote about the coming alternative energy bubble June 3, 2009 (In Search Of The Silver Energy Bullet) and (It is Hard To Tell How Big It Will Get Or How High It Will Rise, But One Thing Is For Sure - A Bubble Will Burst).
Drill Baby Drill. Domestic oil, clean coal and natural gas will take a few years to exploit but offers the best interim energy source until alternative energy becomes viable. This is an economic and national security issue. The marketplace, not some artificial mandate from the government or a wishful entrepreneur, will drive viability of alternative energy. As the Obama administration is poised to make billion dollar investments in sun and wind, lets not forget what the marketplace has shown T. Boone Pickens in his $40 million dollar lesson. I hope America doesn’t wait to learn a multi-billion dollar lesson.
Health Care starts in the Laboratory.
The Obama administration may have hit a speed bump in health care legislation, but it continues to push forward with national health care. With almost 90% of the population covered under some form of health care insurance and over 70% with health care insurance satisfied with their plan, people are starting to question the wisdom of this transformation.
Undertaking such a radical change in such a significant part of American's lives comes with significant risk. The best way to mitigate risk is to begin with small tests and modify the process along the way. The United States offers the perfect laboratory. With fifty states and the ambition to overhaul health care, why aren't we testing various alternatives in different states to determine what works best. We can prove the concept and build greater support for the program. This may take a couple of extra years to fully implement reform, but it will be reform we can count on to work. The current approach is a huge gamble with American's health and the cost of the program.
The intrusion of government into our daily lives.
Documents released Monday show the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration withheld information regarding cell phone use by drivers in 2002. The report indicated that cell phone use causes accidents. Even hands free phones distract drivers. The government says that if the study were released it may have prevented deaths. The fact that the study was withheld cost American lives. Somehow I doubt it. Consider the tobacco research. Tobacco users have known for decades that cigarettes can cause serious medical problems. Despite all of the advertising and warnings, cigarette users continued to smoke. Some say it was an addiction. Based on what I have seen with drivers and mobile phone users, these people are equally addicted. Besides, who doesn’t know that talking on the phone or text messaging while driving is a distraction? When did we need the government to tell us the obvious? When will we become personally responsible for our actions?
From one administration to another: Close the door behind you. Health care negotiations behind closed doors.
Who can forget the outrage in 2001-2003 when V.P. Dick Chaney met in secret with oil executives? The administration said the meetings discussed energy policy and American energy requirements. The Democrats said Chaney made a deal with big oil to increase their profits.
We now learn that the Obama administration met in secret with members ofthe AMA and pharmaceutical companies. Soon afterwards the administration announced an agreement to reduce medical costs and the AMA was in support of the health care bill. Can someone please explain the difference?
Paving the way for 11 million Democratic citizens.
Have you noticed that California could save $11 billion a year by eliminating benefits (health, education, welfare) to illegal immigrants but they don’t?
Have you noticed that the Obama administration could gain broader acceptance of the health care bill if they would remove illegal immigrants, but they don’t?
Have you noticed that Congress could reduce deficit spending if they would eliminate welfare and support of illegal immigrants, but they don’t?
Have you thought about the fact that we could reduce unemployment if we employed our own people rather than illegal immigrants, but we don’t?
Have you thought about why the government has changed tactics and is nowgoing after businesses that hire illegal immigrants rather than approaching the illegal immigrants?
Why has our government given illegal immigrants a pass? Some say that they do the jobs that Americans won’t. With official unemployment approaching 10% and unofficial unemployment approaching 20%, there are plenty of people that will do these jobs.
California could correct much of their deficit if they would deal with illegal aliens. It is believed that 40% of all workers in L. A. County (L. A. County has 10.2 million people) are working for cash and not paying taxes. 95% of warrants for murder in Los Angeles are for illegal aliens. Over 2/3 of all births in Los Angeles County are to illegal alien Mexicans on Medi-Cal. Nearly 35% of all inmates in California detention centers are Mexican nationals here illegally.
Could it be that 11 million potential Democratic voters are more important than fixing the economic mess?
