Today's Zinger:
In Search Of The Silver Energy Bullet.
The Morning Briefing:
Air pollution is enveloping many third world and emerging countries. The price of oil is highly volatile and the price is rising rapidly. Global economic growth and prosperity are threatened by energy dependence and global warming.
These are some of the most challenging issues facing mankind. A society that has flourished under the industrial revolution that was fueled by oil and other fossil fuels will be limited by access to cheap oil and concern for the very environment that is needed for our existence. More countries are evolving into vast consumers of resources needed to expand their economies and to bring a better quality of life to their people.
My Opinion:
Some say we will run out of oil in 50-100 years. Some say that global warming will cause starvation in the next 50-100 years. Others say we can continue status quo for another 50-100 years and man will invent a new energy platform in time. But no matter how you look at it, there is a cliff ahead.
Fifty to 100 years is one lifetime on a planet that has been inhabited by man for thousands of years and has polluted its environment in less that 50 years.
In the past ten years, people around the world are taking sides on global warming and energy. It seems to me that the arguments become exaggerated in order to get your attention, not for a rational discussion, but for social or political advantage. You either agree or disagree with global warming.
Those that respond to fear tend to argue for the Kyoto treaty, gas efficient cars and a cap and trade tax as needed now. Those that respond to self satisfaction do not see a need for a radical shift in direction and argue that global warming is not real and we have sufficient oil reserves for the foreseeable future.
The intelligent middle understands that there is a limited supply of oil and, at this time, we do not have an alternative that will power our future. Anyone that understands the concept of responsibility knows that we must take care of this planet for future generations. I am not a scientist with training in global warming. I am not a geologist trained in finding oil. I am a citizen of this country and planet that knows there is an end to fossil energy.
As a capitalist, I believe in the power of free choice and the power of free markets. However, free choice and free markets can be too free, as we have seen through the meltdown of the worldwide financial markets. Americans are consumers that make decisions for themselves. The vast majority do not make voluntary decisions for the general benefit of society. Left to free markets, we may throw this country, and the world, into the most cataclysmic economic upheaval. This is entirely possible without a logical transition to a new energy future. Energy prices will rise rapidly as we deplete reserves. These are societal issues that require central leadership.
It is easy to say that the marketplace will create alternative energy solutions as the price of oil increases. However, if the price of oil increases quickly, there will be insufficient time to transition to a new energy platform without affecting economic growth and stability. We are looking at decades of change to make the transition under the current energy alternatives.
The Conculsion:
The current administration is attempting to deal with some of these issues by throwing money and attention at various alternatives. This is not a strategy, this is not a plan, it is at best a gamble; placing chips on each alternative. The bigger question is how will the world come together on this issue.
I know that many people will disagree with me, others will say right-on. What I hope occurs is that we each lose our banner and ask, “Are we entitled to everything that this earth has to offer while we are here, or do we have a responsibility to future generations? “ I hope we ask, should we count on a silver energy bullet showing up in time to replace oil? There is a cliff ahead. Hopefully, we will be able to change course before it causes us to slam on the economic brakes and cause mass disruption in society in say 20, 30 or 50 years. I guess it isn’t my problem but is certainly my children’s future and I don’t want to be responsible for ignoring the obvious.

I watched a show last night called Earth 2100. Many of the points you raised were talked about in the TV show. The show was extreme and scare tactics. Your point of view is very authentic and considered. Thanks for the common sense thoughts on this highly charged issue.

Zinger King: Years ago when oil was a geological issue, and not so wrapped up in politics and our economies, the predictions indicated we would deplete the world-wide reserves of oil in the 2025 to 2050 period. I believe this prediction can still be justified if we can strip out the "spin" on this issue from the important players in the oil business: the oil companies, the exporting countries, and the speculators. Each of these sing a different tune depending on the time and the issue. But one can believe that as surely as we are sitting here we will run out of oil at some point in the future. So the real issue in not the price but the supply. The primary driver for a future not dependent on oil is the fact that there will not be anymore. This fact is obfuscated by all the politics surrounding this commodity. So, it is incumbent on us all to find the sustainable energy source or sources before "our well runs dry".

So if each person is unwilling to make sacrifice without others making the same commitment, then how does this get resolved? I think we may be heading to a cliff and nothing will change it until it is too late. It feels like Thelma and Louise. Buckle up, hold hands and we race to disaster.
